When we created Claybrook we knew we wanted a studio space that would cater to homeowners and contract specifiers alike. It had to be accessible but with an edge. Big enough to display our full range of tiles from day one, but flexible enough to allow us to grow over time, and in an interesting building located somewhere with buzz. The 10 founding members all worked together at Fired Earth for many years. We wanted to mould something a little fresher and more design led than our previous business, with an emphasis on colour, pattern and great value. 123, Curtain Road, Shoreditch fits the bill perfectly as a location to show off our exciting new enterprise.
Curtain Road has a varied but often creative history. The Curtain Theatre, which was located a few doors away from the Claybrook Studio building and named after a walled pasture it abutted, was the first theatre to perform Romeo and Juliet. On lease expiry at Christmas 1598, the theatre was dismantled and shipped across the frozen river Thames to Southwark where it became William Shakespeare’s The Globe. Eventually the area became home to the wholesale furniture industry for sale and supply for trade both here and abroad. It also became home to the London School of fashion sustaining the area's reputation for innovation and design.
At 2,000sqft over two floors, the space at 123 lends itself brilliantly to allowing us to open on the ground floor with tile displays, whilst creating a stunning space at basement level for the contracts team. Bathed with light from 20 foot high ceilings, windows front and back and a capacious bronze staircase filtering sunlight to the basement, the whole space has a gallery feel; perfect for showcasing our stunning ranges. Over time the product selection will grow and the store easily allows us to incorporate new ranges as we go. The first to join tiles will be gorgeous wood flooring in planks and parquet.
